In recent times the home work given to first standard students seem to be on higher side, adding more weight to the bag carried by students! The homework given is adding around 2 Kgs to the school bag. Which would make bag heavier for students to carry! Thus causing damage to the shoulder, back and spinal cord in the long run!
Since the bag is heavier than usual, I checked the weight of items carried in school bag (on 2/7/18). It is shocking to know the the child (boy/girl) carries around 4 kg weight on his shoulders every day!! Here is the break up of the weight of each of the item that is carried by student(as instructed by teacher)
Kannada Text Book........ 240gm.
EVS Text........................ 310gm.
Composite Maths........... 360gm
English Text ....................290gm
Kannada Note book.........260gm
work book....................... 110gm.
School Dairy.................... 300gm.
Rough work..................... 100gm.
Total Weight of books alone ...1970gm

Along with the books, students have to carry other essentials items, which would typical weigh:
School bag (Light weight nylon) = 300gm.
Pencil Box = 150gm.
Napkin = 40gm.
Water bottle = 500gm
Lunch box and lunch bag = 350gm
Food weight = 690gm approx (breakfast and lunch)
Total weight of essential items= 2030gm.
Seasonal item (rain coat) = 300gm
The grand total (excluding rain coat) of the weight that is typically carried by the 1st student is around 4000gm or 4Kg. Which is 100% more than the recommended weight for a student. (The weight of the 5-6 year old child is around 20kgs. And as per recent court ruling the weight a student carries, should not exceed 10% of the weight of the child). As you may be knowing, in a recent ruling the Madras high court said :
No home work for 1st and 2nd standard students.
Only subjects allowed in 1st and 2nd standard are language and mathematics.

Below is the excerpt from the high court judgement.
An Excerpt from the judgement
"The judge said state board schools too should follow the directions issued by NCERT. The court directed the union government to direct the state governments not to prescribe any homework for class 1 and 2 students in the state board/matriculation/Anglo-Indian schools and not to prescribe any other subjects except language and mathematics for class 1 and 2 students, and language, EVS and mathematics for classes 2 to 5. The judge, issuing the directions, posted the matter after four weeks for a compliance report by the Centre, the state governments and the union territories."
Despite recommendations from NCERT and high court, the students are still given home work and made to carry unreasonable/unhealthy load on their shoulders and back. This is very unfortunate situation!
When will teachers, head mistress, principals, education trusts, school boards and education ministries take the cognizance of the matter? And arrive at a scientific and sensible decision?
Its been more than a month since the judgement of the high court and the reopening of school, the plight of the students remains the same? NCERT directive and high court judgement doesn't seem to have any influence on the decision makers. The unscrupulous, unscientific and insensible ways of imparting education continues; unabated!
I only hope Mr.Modi and PMO takes cognizance of the matter and expedite the rationalization of education system in India.
